Case Study: Fire Extinguisher Installation for Transport for Wales Rail, Taff Wells Depot, South Wales

As part of our ongoing partnership with Transport for Wales Rail, H3 Fire and Security was tasked with meeting the fire extinguisher requirements for the recently opened Taff Wells Depot in South Wales.

The project was spearheaded by F&S Service Engineer Jeff Williams and Internal Sales Executive Geraint Owens. H3 conducted an intensive site analysis using building plans, blueprints, and discussions TFW Rail Officials to devise a comprehensive solution that fully met the depot’s fire extinguishing needs.

The analysis determined that the depot required the installation and commissioning of over 240 components of fire extinguishing equipment throughout the site. This included, but was not limited to, the following:

  • CO2 Extinguishers (2kg and 5kg)
  • Foam extinguishers (both with and without Anti-Freeze)
  • Fire Blankets
  • Modular stands
  • Extinguisher signage
  • Extinguisher covers

Our service engineers, Jeff Williams and Callum Steele, undertook the work at the Depot in the following areas:

  • Accommodation Block – Ground Floor
  • Accommodation Block – First Floor
  • Main Shed
  • Sanding Shed
  • LV/HV Switch Room
  • Air Compressor Unit
  • Cleaning Store
  • Gatehouse Building

We spent just over 35 working hours on site to complete the installation and commissioning of the equipment in time for the opening of the depot in late June 2024.

Comments from Transport For Wales Rail:

H3 worked very closely with us to ensure that the installation of all the required fire fighting equipment was installed in time for handover by the principal contractor. Timescales were tight and vehicle access was due to be restricted as the project reached its final phase. Without the equipment installed, the site would not have met our internal Safety Validation checkpoint meaning handover wouldn’t have been possible. Before we had received a completed Fire Risk Assessment, H3 worked from building plans to ensure that the equipment was ordered and available to install, over the weekend we managed to secure a date of installation that commenced the following Monday. We are very grateful for the continued professional service we are provided with meeting our operational demands.
